Dr. Reza Mirshams earned his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Industrial Metallurgy and Metallurgical Engineering. He is a licensed professional engineer with 45 years of combined industrial and academic experience.
Experience
As an engineering materials expert, Dr. Mirshams has taught courses in various areas. The areas of expertise and topics that Dr. Mirshams has taught include mechanical metallurgy, manufacturing processes of materials, corrosion, galvanized steel, failure analysis of materials, fatigue, creep, engineering product design and development, materials selection in engineering design, and mechanical behavior and fracture mechanisms. His consulting and expert witness services include forensic engineering and metallurgical failure analysis.
Research Topics
Research interests of Dr. Mirshams have increased tenfold over time which has built upon his expertise. The areas of research topics include:
- mechanical metallurgy
- corrosion assessment
- mitigation for the construction industry and energy industry
- heat treatments of steel
- mechanical behavior of materials-microstructure relations
- fracture mechanics
- fatigue and creep of metals
- nano and micro scales properties
- advanced materials for structural applications in mechanical systems
As a result, his industrial experience led him to serve as technical director in steel making and production of alloyed steel, sheet metal forming, and galvanizing steel sheets, process engineering design, failure analysis of structural parts in the production line and caused by various loading types, fatigue and creep, stress corrosion cracking (SCC), and galvanic corrosion.
Furthermore, Dr. Mirshams is an advanced writer and expert in his topics of research. He has written 75 published articles and reports and has given presentations at national and international conferences and submitted reports for government grants.
Involvement
Additionally, Dr. Mirshams has testified and has been involved as an expert witness in several materials failure analyses and litigation cases due to flaws in design, materials, and manufacturing processes defects. It led him to become a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Metallurgical and Materials Transactions. And, he is also a member of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) and The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS).
All in all, Dr. Mirshams continued curiosity has led him to become active and involved in the community of metallurgists and metal experts.
